The comfort trap

The reason this needs stating at all is that tracing is pleasant and recall is not, and pleasantness is a poor guide to what is working.

A tracing session ends with a page of correct characters and a sense of competence. A recall session ends with several failures and a list of things to fix. The second one advanced your ability and the first one felt better, which is exactly the wrong feedback for choosing a method.
